What is freight shipping?
Freight shipping
is the transportation of goods in bulk, whether that be by road, air, sea, or railroad. Freight is any shipment that is larger than 30 inches by 30 inches by 30 inches and exceeds 150 pounds. Freight deliveries are either loaded on pallets or floor-loaded. When freight is floor-loaded, it must be unloaded by hand, whereas freight loaded on pallets can be loaded and unloaded using a forklift.
What is LTL vs FTL?
LTL (stands for less than load) shipments do not require a full truckload. In
LTL shipments, the truck typically contains several shipments to different locations. LTL shipments are arranged on pallets and can be anywhere from 150 pounds to 10,000 pounds. A standard truck can transport a maximum of 26 pallets. LTL shipments transport between 1 and 6 pallets. Truckers try to be very efficient when dealing with LTL shipments. There are several benefits to LTL shipments. First, they do not cost as much. In an LTL freight, several small shipments are piled together, and therefore, you are not using the entire truck space. When factoring in the price, you will only have to pay for the space you are using and not the full truckload. Further, LTL truckloads are environmentally friendly because they reduce the amount of emissions due to fewer trucks needing to be used. Finally, LTL shipping is great for small businesses because they will save money on truck space since they typically require less goods to be shipped. Things that can be a struggle with LTL shipments include time, since there are more individual shipments to multiple locations, and finding a carrier since not all carriers offer LTL shipping. Having strong attention to detail is very important in LTL shipping since there are multiple shipments in each truckload with different details and destinations.
FTL (stands for full truckload) shipments are where the one entire load is shipped. No other shipments are included in the truckload. FTL containers transport between 24 and 26 pallets. Advantages of FTL shipping are that they will get to their destination a lot quicker since no other stops have to be made, their is less handling, meaning there is less of a chance that your load will get lost or damaged, and there are less size and weight restrictions.
